"A pioneer African American historian, John Hope Franklin was a highly respected scholar who wrote on many aspects of American history."

His book, From Slavery to Freedom, has sold more than 3 million copies and in 1995, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor.
